[Food Review] Precious Bak Kut Teh

Bak Kut Teh literally translates as "meat bone tea" which is a herbal soup dish that developed by the Hokkien and Teochew. It is popularly served in Malaysia and Singapore. Precious Bak Kut Teh is brought over from Klang and is one of the new restaurants established at Serangoon Road. The soup is boiled for hours with traditional chinese herbs and spices such as star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui, fennel seeds and garlic.

Klang's version of bak kut teh is thick, cloudy, dark and has a strong herbal taste as compared to the Teochew's version which is clear, light and peppery.

Originated in Klang in 1964, this precious Bak Kut Teh recipe was passed down for 3 generations from a Malaysian master in Klang. To date, there are 6 branches in Klang by the name of "紅記肉骨茶" and 6 branches in Ipoh,Perak by the name of "紅記肉骨茶"

Besides chinese tea, a variety of herbal beverages are also available.

Our Klang style dinner has begun! We were served a variety of pork dishes cooked in different ways.

Precious's version of Sweet and Sour Pork Trotters. This was a unique recipe uniquely invented by themselves which added a twist to the traditional vinegar pork trotters. The rich aroma of asaam filled the table, the trotters were melting soft and gravy was a wonderful combination of sweet, spicy and sour.

Meatball soup. We all agreed that the meatballs were very tasty.

The traditional vinegar Pig's Trotters. This dish has plenty of healing properties and is incredibly nourishing, always favoured by Chinese mothers during the confinement period. Precious' version of this is slightly sweeter which i personally preferred.

Dry Bak Kut Teh! This dry form of bak kut teh is cooked with dried chilies and pork belly. The gooey thick gravy is actually prepared by a reduction of the original broth, often recommended locally in Malaysia as a hangover cure.  What makes this dish stand out is the strips of dried cuttlefish that gave depth and a lovely punchy flavour which is extremely tantalizing to the palettes.

2 vegetable dishes, the salted veggie and kai lan were also served.

The signature dish was of course the Pork Belly Soup. Soup is fragrant, not overpowering but not as diluted as some restaurants’ offerings. Soup is specially brewed using a concoction of 11 carefully selected herbs to give it a very aromatic herbal taste.

Service in prompt and refills of soup is efficient. If you like bak kut teh, you may wish to pop by for a try! They are opened for lunch too :)
